Saturday 21st February and we’ve reached Bhopal. We’ve finished our last camp at
Pachmari, high on top of a hill. We reached the campsite as the light was fading,
dodging mad jeep drivers coming around hairpin bends on the wrong side of the road.
A rest day at camp gave us the opportunity to have a faulty dynamo fixed in the local
Prior to Pachmari we visited Nagpur and had the privilege of meeting an English woman,
Leak Pattinson who has set up a refuge and clinic for destitute women, and ladies
suffering from leprosy. A humbling experience indeed.
We’re into our second week and all was going well until we hit a particularly large
speed bump, after which we had a ticking noise from the engine. Some roadside maintenance
and engine stripping failed to find the cause, so we limped into the nearest large
town 60 km. During the afternoon, part of the engine was stripped, the fault found,
rectified and all put back together again. The boys at the garage did a great job,
but there was no way we would make our planned destination that day. We stayed in
the finest hotel that the town had to offer, complete with bugs and bars on the windows.
Next day we motored on to the camp at Hampi and celebrated Valentine’s evening by
candlelight. On wards then to Hyderabad with a planned rest day, which thanks to
some bad hotel food, Morna and Peter spent in bed with food poisoning.
